IVICA ŠUTEJ'S WATERMILL / MUCKO'S WATERMILL

IVICA ŠUTEJ'S WATERMILL / MUCKO'S WATERMILL

The mill originally belonged to Ivica Šutej, known for his musical talent. It stopped working in 1952. Later, the watermill came into the possession of the Mucko family, so it is still popularly called Mucko's watermill among the locals, even though the family did not perform any milling activities.

The story of the former owner reveals an interesting fact: his love for musical art. We can connect these facts with Jakov Gotovac's comic opera Ero the Joker. Through oral tradition and history, we also notice the close connection of millers with the devil, which is also expressed through the mentioned opera, which is a kind of reflection on the miller's world. Ivanec is full of legends that connect water, watermills and mysterious folk beliefs. The ownership of the Ivanec watermills included a diverse spectrum of people: from landowners to musicians, from industrialists to intellectuals and educated millers. Through all these stories, we can follow the social development of the micro-economy of this area through various time periods.
