STORE IN IVANEC - THE FIRST SELF-SERVICE STORE IN SOUTHEASTERN EUROPE

The first self-service store not only in Croatia but also in the wider area of Southeast Europe was opened on December 17, 1956, and was located exactly on the site of this building. The innovative concept was initiated by Andrija Sever, the then director of the company Ivanečki magazin, with the support of the People's Council of the Ivanec Municipality. Many people came to Ivanec to see and learn about the functioning of the first self-service store. Businessmen, merchants, tenants, owners of numerous products and raw materials for trading were happy to come to this store, and the self-service also encouraged visits to Ivanec on a wider level, as people from other parts of Croatia also visited it.

Carefully designed technology and functional solutions enabled the first self-service experience. The store proudly displayed domestic products with clearly visible prices. Working hours were soon extended and the first cash register was acquired.

Furthermore, Ivanečki magazin introduced an innovation in 1963: a traveling mobile store. This mobile store served different villages and towns, but over time local stores took over its role. This concept came to life as a novelty, and Ivanec was forever remembered as the town of the first self-service and mobile store.
