An eight-hour journey to the most famous Croatian shrine
On the occasion of the second visit of the Holy Father John Paul II to Croatia, the route was re-established and marked by the pilgrims from Ivanec and the surrounding towns who went on foot to the "Shrine of Our Lady of Bistrica" in order to show their respect and gratitude. After a 40-year hiatus, the Roman Catholic tradition of a pilgrimage in the Ivanec region was revived in full glory.
The Ivanec Pilgrimage Route starts in front of the Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Ivanec, passes through the village of Prigorec, Prekrižje on Mt. Ivančica, through the village of Donja Batina, to Vinski vrh (where the chapel of the Mother of God is located). The route leads partly by road, partly by footpath and ends at the "Shrine of Our Lady of Bistrica" in Marija Bistrica.
The path is marked with a sign showing a white cross on a yellow square, in accordance with the papal colors. There are special markings on the trail that indicate resting places, sources of drinking water and other pilgrims' needs.
The entire route lasts 8 hours, including one hour of rest, and extends over a total length of 28 km. Adequate physical condition as well as appropriate equipment (including food, drink, clothing and especially footwear) is required to cross this trail.
A pilgrimage along the Ivanec Pilgrimage Route is an opportunity for believers and people seeking a spiritual experience to connect with the religious traditions and culture of this area. Along the way, pilgrims can enjoy the beautiful scenery, meet other pilgrims and visit numerous chapels and shrines along the way.
Marija Bistrica is a famous Marian shrine in Croatia, which attracts thousands of pilgrims every year, and heading towards Marija Bistrica from our pilgrimage route is a unique pilgrimage experience.
