Ivanec town park

Ivanec town park

Ivanec town park is one of the most beautiful places in Ivanec and an example of beautiful landscape architecture. The once neglected pond and meadow were transformed into an English garden, thanks to Božidar Kukuljević Sakcinski.

At the entrance to the park there is a flower fountain built in 2006, which serves as a memorial to the real fountain that existed in that place in the last century. The former fountain in Ivanec was made by the artist F. Maruzzi from Zagreb. The recently renovated park now includes a newly built pavilion that attracts guests to various events throughout the year.

Ivanec town park is considered the most beautiful postcard of the town, and during events, it becomes a particularly vibrant place full of positive energy. The chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary was once located in this area, which Ladislav Kukuljević Sakcinski had built in 1881 as a memorial to his wife. Unfortunately, the chapel was destroyed by lightning in 1961, but its traces still bear witness to the history of this place. Within the park, you can also visit the Visitor Center where you will learn more about the rich history of this area.

Ivanec linden tree - older than Gubec linden tree

One of the most impressive elements of the park is the old Ivanec linden tree, a beautiful tree over 600 years old. This linden tree is a symbol of the town and was cloned so that its descendants would be planted throughout the town, preserving its heritage. Although there is no precise information about the year of planting, it is believed that this dignified lady is approximately 600 years old, which makes her older than the famous Gubec linden tree! Since this tree has a special symbolic importance for the whole of Ivanec and its inhabitants, it was decided to permanently preserve its genetic heritage by grafting scions collected from the parent tree onto prepared substrates in order to obtain a tree with the same genetic characteristics.
