St. Vincent's Day is a traditional ceremony marking the beginning of the wine growing season. In Ivanec, this tradition is nurtured by the Society of Folk Customs „Maska" and the Association of Winemakers and Winegrowers „Peharček“. The vine is decorated with smoked sausages, bacon, and ribs, and then it is pruned for the first time and poured with old wine. This celebration usually ends with a party with musicians from Ivanec.
The Day of St. Vincent, the patron saint of winegrowers, is celebrated on January 22, which is considered the beginning of the annual vegetative cycle of the vine.
The winemakers then visit their vineyards, water some vines with a good drop, present them with homemade sausage, and cut the first vines and take them home. On this occasion, the rite of vine pruning is performed, and the cut vine is ritually "baptized" with old wine, decorated with sausages and presented with wheat, corn, grapes and bread with the wish that it be fruitful and give more yield. According to folk custom, everything is accompanied by songs and music, along with appropriate festivities and a tour of wine cellars, as well as an offer of local wine.
